Materials: worsted to heavy worsted weight yarn, two colors. I used very close to 220 grams of each color. size 6 needles (makes for a nice stiff fabric) The project in the photo is made with relatively heavy worsted weight and size 6 needles. Probably would have been fine with size 7 needles, but I wanted to use undersized needles to help the illusion show clearly. Drawback is that I think you can discern more of it than I would have wanted when looking at it straight on. In a lame attempt to defend myself, the work itself actually has very distinct lines when viewed in real life, but poor picture quality (I used my phone to take the photos) and an incomplete wood frame holding it together in the back make it looks a bit wonky. It's about 36in x 36in. Notes: Start with background color (MC) for first two rows, then switch to letting color (CC). You'll switch colors every two rows, so rows (1/2,5/6,9/10,13/14, etc) will be in MC, and the rest in CC. The pattern is presented in two halves, in case you want to offset them vertically, make just one, or don't want to carry around too big of a project at once. You can certainly knit it all in one piece; I designed it so that there is a two stitch overlap for seaming, so you can wipe out two stitches in the middle and just attach the two sides. I'll present the two sides in a sqaushed table format so it's still relatively easy to read if you choose to do that! If knit in two pieces, I used a mattress stitch to connect the two pieces (just grab the purl bump for the one out of every four stitches that isn't knit when seaming). Note that if you're only doing one half, I think traditionally, it would be the right half only. Somewhat theoretical notes (you can skip this part): (a) Always knit every stitch when on the right side. The only patterning is on the wrong side rows. (b) The pattern is made via the purl bumps which show up on the right side when knitting/purling on the wrong side. (c) Basically, whenever you want lettering to appear, you purl the MC (so that it's recessed on the right side), or knit the CC (so that it sticks up on the right side), depending on what color row you're on. That's it! (d) Hence, a patternless structure would be K for all of the MC rows and P for all of the CC rows. (I'm talking even wrong side rows only here.) | ||
